(Swipe these) 11 vital blog writing tips for business owners who wan't to DIY

Don’t want to pay for a blog writer? Think you can do it yourself? Ok then. To help you along, read some of my favourite blog writing tips and turn your freshly penned thoughts into a brilliant read.

It’s nice and short, so print it out and pop it on your wall!

  1. Pull the reader down the page using your engaging copy

  2. Avoid outdated words such as amongst, peruse, henceforth or furthermore

  3. Write like you speak. Try reading your article aloud. Does it sound natural?

  4. Use contractions (due to the above): ‘they’re’ not ‘they are’; ‘weren’t’ not ‘were not’.

  5. Write in active voice — but realise sometimes it’s not appropriate

  6. Keep sentences short, mostly. The odd long sentence is fine and goes well with short sentences. Avoid run-on sentences.

  7. Keep the reading score moderate

  8. Don’t repeatedly use the same words — unless it’s for branding or business purposes. Be creative and mix them up.

  9. Use simple words:

  • use – not utilise

  • get – not obtain

  • ease – not alleviate

  • do – not accomplish

10. Be engaging and descriptive with your blog writing. Do a sweep purely to see if you can add more colour and flavour.

11. Do another sweep to crop unnecessary words and redundancies— go on, be brutal!
